Maurice A. "Mac" Nielsen
Maurice A. "Mac" Nielsen, 75 of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2009, at the Dougherty Hospice House.

Maurice NielsenMaurice Alvin Nielsen was born to Albert and Esther (Sletten) Nielsen on November 4, 1933 in rural Hurley, SD. After spending his childhood in several communities around the state, he graduated from Lake Andes High School in 1951 after a memorable senior year playing in the State "B" Boys Basketball Tournament. Mac then went on to earn a business administration/economics degree from Yankton College in 1955, and spent the early years of his career in New York City, Chicago, and Washington D.C.

On November 8, 1960, he married Arlee Jean Freier in Tripp, SD, and they had three girls. In 1972, the family moved from Maryland to Armour, SD, where Mac purchased the American Family Insurance Agency. He was an active member of the Armour United Church of Christ and the community. Mac was elected to the Armour School Board and served as president during the planning and construction of a new gym. Mac was very involved with the Armour Swim Team as a parent and volunteer. He and Arlee were named Sports Boosters of the year and Mac spent many hours with his daughters in the gym and at the track. Even after moving to Sioux Falls after his retirement, Mac continued to follow Armour athletics, and man his post at the annual Armentrout Relays high jump pit.

Mac was an avid golfer, sculptor, and artist. He left "faces" on napkins and coasters at cafes and pubs around Sioux Falls, Armour, Redfield and points in-between.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughters, Dana Honner and her husband Steve, Sioux Falls, SD, Cari Mack and her husband Hugh, Redfield, SD, Candi Musiel and her husband Matt, Lincoln, NE; a sister, Doris Holden, Pierre, SD; 12 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Mac was preceded in death by his wife Arlee, and his parents.
