Betty Lou Marone Olson

Betty Lou Marone Olson passed away on November 20, 2018. She will be missed.

Betty L. Olson, age 87, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at PrairieView Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.

Her funeral service was held on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Huron with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Betty Lou Marone was born on September 25, 1931 to Richard and Clara (VanMoorlehem) Marone in Beadle County, South Dakota. She attended Miner Rural Elementary south of Cavour for grades 1 to 8 and then attended Huron High School, graduating in 1951.

Betty married Donald N. Olson on June 12, 1951 in Huron. Betty was a farmwife, raising her children on the family farm. Betty loved living on the farm and remained on the farm as long as her health allowed. She did enjoy being a substitute school bus driver from 1978-1987.

Betty enjoyed reading, crafts, and knitting. She also loved camping and gardening. She loved animals as well. She was a member of Farm Bureau, 4-H, Grange, Beadle County Extension Club, Fairfield Ladies Aid, and First Baptist Church. Betty was known for her wedding cake decorating and as the Caramel Lady. Betty and Don spent many nights ballroom and square dancing. Don and Betty hosted several foreign exchange students and, in their retirement, they were able to visit some of them in Europe.

Betty is survived by her children Cherry (Willis) Hunter of Sioux Falls, Dawn (John) Coughlin of Huron, Kirk Olson of Huron, and Carol (Don) Vancura of Barnesville, MN. Eight grandchildren Matthew (Angela) Hunter, Michael (Cassy) Hunter, Marcus (Johanna) Hunter, Christopher Coughlin, Amanda (Josh) Haeder, Addrienne Vancura, Holly Vancura, and Eric Vancura. Ten great-grandchildren Cala, Jakeb, Ella, and Landan Hunter, Devin and Mason Hunter, Sawyer and Hanna Hunter, and Maggie and Laikyn Haeder.

Her brother and sisters Jackie (Raymond) Kuhl, Marilyn Tounsley, and Ronald (Lorraine) Marone. Betty is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2006, her daughter Connie May on May 15, 1954 and two brothers Russell and George Marone as well as brother-in-law Jack Tounsley.

Betty's original HHS51.com profile:

Besides her grandchildren, her house, and trying to get Don to travel and camp more, Betty spends time doing crafts, sewing, knitting and reading. She does feel competent at the VCR and the cell phone, but has no big desire to learn the computer (so they don't have one) and Betty prefers snail mail to e-Mail!!!

My, how things have changed since 1951 and even since writing one of these things in 1981, though most of the good things have stayed the same, only getting older!!!

Betty is still married to her favorite farmer, Don Olson, and it will be a 50th anniversary for them on June 12, 2001. Betty's life is still being blessed by those four children: Cherry since 1953, Dawn since 1955, Kirk since 1958 and Carol since 1964.

She now has three great son-in-laws and no, no daughter-in-law. Betty and Don have eight grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 28. What fun they all are and they know now that grandchildren are their reward for not killing their children!!!

Betty has been involved in many community organizations over the years, but now that Don has retired from farming, but not the farm, they do enjoy more traveling and camping, especially going to see the out-of-town grandkids. Kirk and grandson Mike are doing the farming, but Don does have to be around some to make sure things are done right and Betty has to be around to be sure they all get something to eat!

In 1996, Betty and Don did travel to Germany to visit a foreign exchange student that was here in 1955. They had a wonderful time, but were glad to be back home.
